Learn from Angelique Kerber – if you watched and then listened to her talk about “positive thoughts” and “staying calm and in the moment” it shows us all that no matter how hard the opponent (you can argue that she played against the best of all time in her prime) if you believe you can do it, it can happen.
She spoke of her personal struggles with self belief and how she “serves amazing in practice but in a match I push the ball”, then went on to say that after facing match point in the first round “I said to myself, go for it, you have nothing to lose”. Nobody gave her a chance and she proved everyone wrong. How refreshing was it to see someone react the way she did and just smile like that in celebration of her achievement. “A dream come true” she said.
For all of you competing in USTA team matches and our mixed 7.0 team about to go to regional’s it is something to keep in the back of your mind when the mountain seems too hard to climb.
